So you bought too much new stuff and cant part with the old crap eh? Don't worry, we
all do it.
You buy a new couch and the family will not let you throw the old couch away because it
came from Grandma. Sound familiar?Lets face it, self storage companies are in business
due to our sentimental feelings and guilt. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Paper card companies do the same thing. Were a nation of feeling. Now that you have
decided you need a self storage unit, here is a few things to keep in mind.
1. Shop around for storage company prices.
A 8X10 storage unit on a main street might be $90 a month and $65 a month in a
less popular area.
The average time people rent self storage units is 30 months. Unless you plan on visiting
your stored memories every month, shop by lowest price.
2. Find out if the self storage is on an upper or lower level.
If you have mostly bulky items, couches, beds, tables, try and get a lower or
ground level storage.
Upper level storage is best for boxes and smaller items.
3. Take inventory of what you plan to store.
Make a list in a 3D category, "Definitely Keep" "Deciding"
"Donate"
"When in doubt, throw it out" Many people who put items in storage end up
throwing out most of it away at the end. Unless it has unlimited sentimental value or
cannot be replaced, you may just want to purchase the item new, rather than paying monthly
storage fees.
4. Check on insurance coverage for your possessions while in storage.
If you are storing items in self storage with any value most larger storage units will
offer insurance for the contents of your self storage. Its also smart to buy a good
quality lock. Don't be cheap and put a $2 lock to safeguard unlimited sentimental value
items in your storage. |
